  • Country: Nigeria

Project Information

The two major depots which were to serve as operating bases for the Lagos BRT Line 2 transport scheme which runs from Oshodi to Obalende (via Mile 2) and to Apapa North were solely designed by Precision Technologies Consultants Limited (PTCL) Lagos Nigeria from July 2010 to January 2011 (6months). The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) in September 2009 engaged Integrated Transport Planning Limited (ITP) Central Milton Keynes United Kingdom to undertake the feasibility studies and planning of transport scheme for the above corridor (the second of the five identified major corridors in Lagos) tagged Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line 2 system. The bus station design was done by Planet Project Limited, Lagos Nigeria while the terminals, brt lane and other infrastructure were designed by Dar Al-Handasah (Shair & Partners) Lagos Nigeria, Beirut Lebanon as the lead consultant.

The largest and most important facility of the project is the 300-bus-capacity Bus Depot (2nos) on overall site area of 10 hectares (i.e 5 hectares per depot) handled by PTCL in the detailed design areas of architecture, civil-structure & foundation engineering, electrical & mechanical engineering, and quantity surveying / costing. The two depots were designed to be situated on the same site, but separated so that each depot is self contained with its own vehicular access and facilities. Each depot provides parking accommodation, servicing & maintenance facilities for vehicles, fuelling & washing facilities, an administrative function, and facilities for staff. The components of the depot are two-storey operation building, masonry perifence, access road, water supply headwork, power substation, plant house, gate / security house, public convenience, mega auto-mechanic workshop, filling station, oil storage compound, automated bus wash base, bus park pavement structure, staff / visitors parking, stormwater drainage network, fire station, horticulture and crew building.

The general line 2 scheme is designed to interchange with the proposed Blue Line of the Light Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) at National Theatre before terminating at Obalende. The scheme is to provide quality, accessible and affordable mass transport system for the residents of Lagos State. It will significantly and visibly improved mobility and transport affordability in the city of Lagos through regulatory reform and by facilitation of person movement on major corridors through combination of traffic management and implementation of a high quality high performance BRT system. This is a bilateral operation type of BRT system. The system when birthed will move about 500,000 passengers (pax) per week-day on the corridor with feeder routes from mile 12, Maryland, Anthony averaging 30,000 pax per hour.
