Project Information

The Ondo State Government of Nigeria under the governorship of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko in 2008 embarked on Urban Renewal Programme in Akure the capital city of the state. This renewal programme included implementation of organized transport, corridor and city-scape remodelling scheme on major corridors within the city. This was also to be replicated later in the two other senatorial district headquarters at Ikare and Okitipupa towns to equally address some prevailing traffic problems in the sector.

The organized transport and remodelling scheme was planned and implemented on Oyemekun-Adesida road, Ondo road, Fiwasaye-Obale-Owo road and some tributary routes within the state capital city, Akure with a total length of approximately 25kilometres. Some specific challenges the scheme addressed are: traffic congestion, hindered traffic flow, ridiculously high travel time, indiscriminate refuse dumping, defacement of the city around Erekesan / other major markets and arterial junctions, de-beautification, deregulated transport fares, encroachment and loss of road space due to commercial activities and parking on carriageway, lack of functional traffic management measures, primitive dilapidated bus stop shelters and unorganized garages dotting the city. The infrastructure implemented for the scheme included: 16no Major Bus Stations (i.e bus stop, lay-by & shelter), 28no Minor Bus Stations, 2no Bus Terminals, 2no Mini Bus Depots / Interchanges,  1no Major Bus Depot / Interchange,  Street Lights and Traffic system.

Ondo State Government through Ministry of Works commissioned a consortium of Precision Technologies Consultants Limited (PTCL) Lagos, Nigeria and Planet Project Limited (PPL) Lagos, Nigeria in a design & build service contract to carry out the “Planning, Detailed Engineering Design & Construction Implementation of the Transport & Infrastructure Facilities Remodelling in Akure City”. This included the facilities and corridors mentioned in above paragraphs. The phase one of the project was executed from June 2009 to December 2012 while phase two which covers the 3no depots / interchanges is ongoing.

As the most significant of the infrastructure facilities in the project, the 1.8 hectares mini bus depot / interchange 1 situated along Akure-Owo-Abuja road is to accommodate 105 buses with ancillary facilities within, the 1.3 hectares mini bus depot / interchange 2 situated at the defunct Owena mass transit base Obale area is to accommodate 110 buses with supportive components while the 2.5 hectares major depot / interchange 3 situated at Orita-Obele, Oyemekun road is to accommodate 220 buses and a lot functional facilities and to serve as the scheme’s transport undertaking’s primary operating base. The numerous components present in the interchanges are operation (or terminal) building, canteen, clinic, gate/security houses, fuel dumps, auto mechanic workshop, parking pavement, public convenience, water headwork, plant house, bus & taxi terminal shelters, filling / service station, police building, wash bay, warehouse, national union of road transport workers’ (nurtw) office building, street light & furniture, power substation and masonry perimeter fence. The transport aspect of the remodelling scheme is designed to operate at a reasonable cost to the users and yet profitable to the operators using quality taxis, mini and high capacity buses which meet international service standards, environmentally friendly, operating on priority (non-exclusive) lanes, at reduced travelling time. The system when fully completed should move about 88,000 passengers (pax) per week on the Intracity, intercity and interstate corridors.
